Meditation for Health Recordings

These self-help recordings are designed to guide your home practice of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). They have detailed introductions and can be used for independent practice by those not enrolled in an MBSR program. We use these recordings in our clinic, and they are fully compatible with standard 8 week programs of MBSR.

These audioguides are intended to support your regular medical care, and we encourage you to discuss their use with your doctor. We are happy to send medical information packages to the doctor, at your request.

A useful book to accompany these audioguides is Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness, by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. (Dell Publishing,1990)

** The INTRODUCTION TO HATHA YOGA recording includes a basic introduction and a step-by-step guide to a series of simple yoga poses. Emphasis is on yoga as an awareness practice, not an exercise program. The 15 minute introduction covers basic principles of yoga practice, and discusses methods useful for those with fatigue and physical limitations, including those recovering from surgery or illness. (All poses are as illustrated on pages 106-109 of Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D.)

Yoga practice is an important part of the MBSR program. It promotes body awareness, and develops strength and coordination. It can be useful for all the conditions that have been shown to respond to MBSR practice, especially when combined with the Body Scan Meditation. It can be especially helpful for conditions of fatigue or recovery from illness or surgery, because this type of meditative body movement encourages the return of one's physical vitality.

Many people with back and neck problems find that the regular practice of these poses helps their condition. However, if you do have back or neck problems, it is best to discuss use of this recording with your physician and physical therapist before attempting the described poses. *Meditation practice can sometimes make us more aware of strong emotions, uncomfortable body sensations, or unwanted thoughts or memories.
*Some of the yoga poses described by The Introduction to Hatha Yoga recording, may need to be changed or avoided by those with back or neck problems, high blood pressure, a heart condition, eye disease, or other chronic illness. This includes those with a past history of stroke, and tumor or surgery especially of the head, neck and back.

We are also happy to mail the CDs to you, but we will need to charge you the extra postal costs. Deliveries are by XpressPost.
